Just some thoughts

#1. Can someone please explain to me how the Cleveland Browns, a 1-11 team with really no future, beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, the defending SuperBowl Champs? Yea, the Browns beat Steelers. I still find it hard to believe that the Lions were able to put 45 pts against an NFL defence only to watch them sack Big Ben 8 times and give up 6 pts (two FGs). The Browns now have 2 wins: 6-3 against the Bills and 13-6 against the Steelers. What's wrong with this statement. Actually, what's wrong with the Steel Curtain? 3 straight losses to, and I'm having a hard time not bursting out laughing in the library, the Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and Cleveland Browns. These are not typos and should serve as a wake-up call to those thinking about a repeat. The D is getting older and the O-Line is non-existent. I understand that Polamalu is an amazing play-maker on D, but the Defence seems weak an d without leadership. However, 3 straights losses is inexcusable for team with much talent than they are playing with now. My little brother posted something on my friends wall and I find it necessary to share it with you all:

Tailgating before the big game $20,
Buying a terrible towel $15,
Getting a big Ben jersey $80,
Losing to the Browns in PrimeTime .... priceless

#2. Tiger Woods

The guy made a mistake, a huge one, and now he's living with the consequences. I wonder if he thought he would get away with it given the amount of privacy he had over his private life up to 2 weeks ago. Today, he announced on his website that he is taking an indefinite leave from Golf to deal with his personal life (just a screen for: I need to do whatever I can to keep my wife happy right now). I think he needs to tackle this head on. The only way he'll win back people is by admitting what's happened, go on Oprah, say sorry, and then win back his fans. By side-stepping the issue now, it will only highlight it again when he comes back to play gold, however long that may be. I wouldn't be surprised if his wife is asking he not play golf at all next year.

#3. Phoenix Coyotes to be sold to Ice Edge Holdings.

While no details are out yet, I am absolutely not surprised that Bettman/NHL have sold the team to a group that has said they will keep the team in Glendale. I find that very hard to believe that they haven't included a clause that says if we lose $XYZ or a certain %, or can't sell ticekts after a certain date, they can't move the team. They are a decent team playing infront of less than 10K fans a home game. This team will have moved in the next 5 years, I guarantee it. (summary of the debacle: Bettman is an egotistical idiot and still believes the South is a viable market for hockey).

#4. This pains me to say, but I have been impressed with the leafs over the past 2 weeks. They are starting to become the team Burke wants them to be: A team that shows up and is tough to play against on a nightly basis. Why is that? Well, partly due to the fact the the team is composed mostly of 2nd and 3rd liners on offence, with the exception of Kessel (who has convinced me). Also, the team is well structured on D; Schenn is slowly getting better, Karberle is good. Overall, they are a competitive team and as long as their draft pick for the next two years isn't a lottery pick, they should be tough to play against for a while.

Cheers

World Cup Draw 2010 - Group A

After a week of thinking and looking for some time to write this, I decided that when I should be studying for physics, I'll do this instead. This will be my group-by-group breakdown. starting with Group A.

Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France.

South Africa. The host nation was drawn into what I consider the one of the weaker groups. While showing up and playing well at the Confederation's Cup last year in front of their fans, I don't expect much from them again (nor do the rest of the teams in the group I assume). They finish 0-2-1 and last in the group.

Mexico. Mexico are a team that has had some internal conflict these past few months, including a coach change and some dissent among the players. However, a good qualifying campaign holds some promise for the Gold Cup champions. They play with some flair but again, don't expect too much. They are a team in transition. Marquez is an aging wonder but I wonder if he'll be able to hold up. Some of their young talent hasn't developed as they would've hope since '06 and I don't expect too much. 2-1-0, place 2rd in the group.

France. I truly hope they lose every game at the world Cup. They have no right to be playing in South Africa this summer. They played without ambition during qualifying and should have lost of Ireland in that playoff. They have yet to figure out the midfield since Zidane. Gourcuff is good, but not of the same calibur as other playmaking midfields. Domenech has no idea what he is doing as a coach and I believe he should have been sacked after their dismal showing at Euro '08. However, given my bias against them, the team is full of players who can score a magical goal and have arguably the best Left Back in the world in Evra. Look for them to top the group, assuming they beat the South American's in their opening game. 3-0-0, 1st in the group.

Uruguay. The South Americans had a very up-and-down qualifying session, just squeaking into the playoffs after their loss to Argentina on the last day. However, they out-played Costa Rica in the CONMBOL-CONCACAF playoff earned they way to the big dance this summer. Nevertheless, They were unable to beat any of the 4 teams above them during South American Qualifying and since they were unable to beat a Maradona's Argentina, I don't see them progressing out of the group. However, if they get anything out of the game with France, this will change. 0-2-1 and 3rd in group based on GF.

Overall the group finishes:
1st: France
2nd: Mexico
3rd: Uruguay
4th: South Africa

I will be back later this weekend with my thoughts on Groups B through D.

Cheers
